Day 1-3: Travel May 9-11

Tuesday, May 9, 2017 : my niece, Zoey, who is watching the girls, turned 20. Happy birthday, Zoey! I made tacos for her birthday dinner and my mom brought brownies and ice cream.

7:30 pm : said our goodbyes and gave lots of hugs and kisses to the girls. Trent's parents drove us to the Newark, NJ airport

10:30 pm : Airport check in. This went surprisingly well. We just showed our passport and they printed our boarding passes.

1:00 am : Board plane for 15 hour flight to Hong Kong.

So happy to be on a plane!!

1:45 am : take off. They offered us dinner right away. We knew we wouldn't be offered breakfast for about 13 hours so decided to eat. I had some sort of pasta and Trent had beef and rice. There were some unusual smells with the different foods provided.

The first four to six hours of the flight were okay. I slept off and on. Then I started to get a headache. There was quite a bit of turbulence throughout the flight. Trent got some cup noodles for a snack and the smell seemed really strong to me.

About halfway through the flight I made a dash for the bathroom and threw up. The bathrooms had a constant stream of people so I barely made it in before getting sick.

The rest of the flight was pretty bad, especially the last 2 hours. Before landing I thought I was going to be sick and there was no way I could get to the bathroom that Trent was waiting in line to use. I caught his eye and he dashed to find an airline attendant. There weren't any barf bags available on this flight. It took him awhile to find help and even longer before an attendant brought me some water and a plastic bag. I had my head between my knees and was trying to breathe really deep. The flight attendant told me to sit up and look straight ahead as it helps to not be sick. It took all my willpower not to put my head down.

I made it through landing without getting sick. Unfortunately, I was barely off the plane when I made use of the plastic bag. After sitting for awhile we needed to figure out where to go to get our connecting flight. This took what seemed like forever when all I wanted to do was curl up in the fetal position.

As we walked through the airport we walked past probably 10 perfume stores. The smell was turning my stomach. I had thrown out my used plastic bag and desperately needed to find a bathroom. Luck was not on my side and I threw up on the floor of the airport hallway.

I write this not to gross you out, but so Ruth could know how much we went through to bring her home, much like I would write a "birth story" for my biological children.

Finally we found a place where I could lie down while we waited for our gate number to show up. Once that was made available we trekked through the airport to our proper gate where I immediately fell back to sleep. I was quite miserable. Before our flight up to Beijing I was very very nervous about getting sick again. I thank you all for your prayers and feel sure they were answered as I felt fine the entire flight.

So tired and ready to get OFF a plane!

Getting through immigration and customs and getting our luggage was quite the thing. I was glad to find our driver and have him escort us to a waiting car so we could be driven to our hotel.

First glimpse of Beijing.

Our hotel is beautiful.

Elevator doors.

We got into our hotel at about 3:00 and were supposed to meet Hannah, Callum and Ruth at 3:30. We bumped it back to 3:45. Read more about that meeting in my next post!
